This Week in Lagos (Wole Soyinka’s Special Feature)

Author:

Hello Theatre lovers, This month is all about theatre in Lagos and celebrating the life of the Legend ‘[rad-hl]Wole Soyinka[/rad-hl]’. As the Great playwright and Nobel prize winner turns 79, the Theatre society in Lagos have decided to dedicate this month to celebrate [rad-hl]Wole Soyinka[/rad-hl] and his works.

I am sure every one of us must have come across some of his works growing up especially reading books like The lion and the jewel in Primary school. Some of his other works include ‘[rad-hl]The Swamp Dwellers[/rad-hl], [rad-hl]the Trials of Brother Jero[/rad-hl],[rad-hl]Kongi’s Harvest[/rad-hl],[rad-hl]Death and the King’s Horseman [/rad-hl]and [rad-hl]A dance of the forests[/rad-hl].

The Theatre society in Lagos that comprises different performing Arts companies are putting together different theatre shows this month in honor of [rad-hl]Wole Soyinka[/rad-hl]. The shows are some of his works but directed and produced by others.

This weekend, the first play “[rad-hl]A harvest with Wole Soyinka[/rad-hl]” will hold at Terra Kulture, Lagos. This time last year Performing Arts Studio & Workshop (PAWS) put together a series of sketches by [rad-hl]Wole Soyinka[/rad-hl] to celebrate him on his birthday and I was opportuned to see one of the shows at Terra Kulture last year. I am a huge theatre fan because they are really creative and original. I can barely wait for this month’s show to start.

Produced and directed by Kenneth Uropho ‘[rad-hl]A harvest with Wole Soyinka[/rad-hl]’ is about The Jero Plays. Two short plays about Brother Jeroboam, the rather less than holy West African “beach divine” created by Nobel Laureate Professor [rad-hl]Wole Soyinka[/rad-hl]. In this original comedy, the charlatan preacher, burdened by a “cross” known as the daughter of Eve uses Christian superstition for his own salvation. In the sequel, the profit minded “Prophet” thwarts a government attempt to cleanse the beach of all the dubious brethren who ply their trade there.

Interested [rad-hl]Wole Soyinka’s[/rad-hl] fans can get a good deal on the tickets to see this play at Terra culture this Sunday [rad-hl]Buy 2 tickets get 1 Free[/rad-hl]. Tickets cost [rad-hl]N3,500[/rad-hl] and the play is showing every Sunday this month.

Make sure to have a Great weekend Out and About Exploring this beautiful City.
