It’s Valentine’s Day, beautiful people, and chances are you are already rocking your red outfits in celebration of love. And just in case you aren’t (or perhaps because you are), I have picked 14 of some of my favorite love songs to help you all get in the mood this February 14th. These songs cut across multiple genres, from soulful R&B to contemporary rock ballads and even some oldies, so there’s bound to be something for just about everyone on this list. So here they are, without further ado and in no specific order.
Toya Delazy – Love is in the Air
This pulsating love anthem was released back in 2012 by South African singer, Toya Delazy. It perfectly captures the very essence of the season of love and as such deserves a place on any playlist this Valentine.
Ed Sheeran – Lego House
Ed Sheeran might be better known today for love ballads Thinking Out Loud and Perfect, but Lego House remains one of his most heartfelt love songs till date.
Jason Mraz – I’m Yours
Take me back to 2008, when I’m Yours by Jason Mraz was one of the most ubiquitous songs making the rounds on Top 40 charts. And why wouldn’t it, with its sweet melodies and sing-along-worthy lyrics.
The Beatles – I Feel Fine
The Fab Four have quite a few love songs in their massive catalogue, but I Feel Fine is the first one that comes to mind each time I think of a Beatles song. Perhaps that is due to its overall catchiness and simplicity.
Michael Jackson – Rock with You
The King of Pop was no stranger to matters of the heart, and there were also a bevy of songs to choose from his catalogue. But I settled on Rock with You for the simple fact that the song still resonates today as much as it did when it released in 1979.
Coldplay – Yellow
I have to admit that I didn’t care much for Yellow when it helped serve as Coldplay’s breakout single back in the year 2000. But for some reason, the song ended up growing on me over the years and now ranks as one of my all-time favorites by the band.
Lady Antebellum – Need You Now
Whatever happened to Lady Antebellum? The country trio have all but faded from the limelight in recent years, but at least they’d left us with this timeless crossover that deals with the all-too-familiar pining for a former lover in the wee hours of the morning.
Billie Eilish – Ocean Eyes
Billie Eilish is a girl that seems to be incapable of doing no wrong, and at the tender age of 15, she’d done a heap of good by composing one of the most breathtakingly beautiful love ballads of modern times.
Train – Drops of Jupiter
There must be something about celestial bodies and their use as metaphors in the lyrics of love songs, because Drops of Jupiter by Train is just chuck full of them. I guess an emotion as strong as love can only be adequately described through such words.
Bruno Mars – Just The Way You Are
Before he became a full-blown player, Bruno Mars was known for crooning about catching grenades for the girl of his dreams. He also showed his willingness to love her as is in this hit song from his debut album, Doo Wops & Hooligans.
Snow Patrol – Chasing Cars
I am a sucker for a great buildup in a rock ballad, and Snow Patrol delivers one of the very best in Chasing Cars, a song that is as much about the mundane pleasures of being with the one you love as it is about the sheer overwhelming nature of the whole thing.
Maxi Priest – Close to You
This golden oldie was probably before your time, and yes I know I am dating myself a little by including it on my list. But hey, a great love song is a great love song regardless of when it was released, or whether you’d grown up listening to it or not.
Savage Garden – To The Moon & Back
Savage Garden’s self-titled debut album was one of the first albums I remember owning (this was way back in 1997), a record I have held on to till this very day. A large reason for that was the inclusion of this timeless classic, which served as the opening track.
Craig David – 7 Days
Born to Do It is one of my favorite albums of all time, so of course I was going to include at least one song from it on my Valentine’s playlist. And I think of all the awesome love songs on the album, 7 Days captures that feeling of meeting someone new and immediately falling in love the best, something that most singletons hope for each and every Valentine.
