Haruna’s Jumia Success Story #JumiaIs4

Author:

I recall vividly an interview invite in 2012 for the position of a Web/graphic designer for a Rocket-internet venture in Nigeria. I had never heard of them, so I had to do a little research about them.

However, I went for the interview a week later at Ikoyi. I was expecting to see men in suits and corporate outfits but to my utmost surprise, everyone was dressed very casually.  I met the CEO of the company and thought to myself that ‘he is really young’. The interview session was seamless but I was very inquisitive and could not refrain from asking him for the name of the company. He was very coy in his response but mentioned ‘Jumia’.

On my first day at work, I noticed my new colleagues were a team of young enthusiastic fellows and like a moth to a flame, my excitement at the prospect of working with the lads was lit.

I set to work immediately and started doing what I know how to do best, Graphic Design! My career growth has been tremendous; I have had four promotions in four years. I started out as a senior graphics designer and today I’m a manager of the Design-Hub in Nigeria. One of my most cherished moments still is Jumia’s Black Friday 2014; the excitement of pioneering such a massive sale in Nigeria drove us to work as early as 6am.

It’s been 4 years of continuous growth, 4 years of daily challenges, 4 years and over 5000 designs dished out, 4 years of capacity building, 4 years of becoming a better marketing representative, 4 years of learning & understanding the mechanics of ecommerce.

Thank you Jumia for the opportunity you gave…… Happy 4th anniversary!!!
