The 92nd Oscar Nominations

The nominations are in! The Academy of Motion Picture Arts has revealed its picks for the various categories that would make up the 92nd Academy Awards ceremony, otherwise known as the Oscars, happening on the 9th of February, 2020. The nominees were announced by Issa Rae and John Cho via a live-stream on the official Oscars YouTube channel.

Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker

Joker once again led the nominations with a total of 11 nods, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor, though it was closely followed by Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood, The Irishman and 1917 with 10 nominations each. This would mark the second year in a row that a movie based on a comic book is getting a nomination for Best Picture, following Black Panther’s nomination last year, and the second time an actor is in the running for an award playing the character, following Heath Ledger’s posthumous win in the Best Supporting Actor category for his portrayal in The Dark Knight.

Elsewhere, Parasite made history for becoming the first South Korean movie to receive a nomination in the recently-renamed Best International Film category. The movie is also vying for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Production Design and Best Film Editing, so its win in the former seems like more or less a given at this point.

Scarlett Johansson in Jojo Rabbit

Scarlett Johansson is also looking to make some history of her own with two acting wins in one night, as she received acting nods in both the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories, for her roles in Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit respectively. Leonardo Dicaprio also received his 5th Best Actor nomination for portraying has-been actor, Rick Dalton, in Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood, an award he finally received for the very first time in 2016 for his role in The Revenant.
