And speaking of the coronavirus, one of the industries that has been hardest hit by the pandemic is the global film industry. This has resulted in cinemas being forced to shutdown, and most of my most anticipated movies for the year being pushed back or delayed indefinitely. There is some light at the end of the tunnel though, with some Chinese cinemas finally resuming operations after months of closure.
But with most cinemas still under lock and key, there are many people at home right now itching to get their movie fix. The good news is several movie studios have stepped up to the challenge by deciding to make their current slate of theatrical releases available on video-on-demand (VOD) and streaming services. So what follows are 10 of the latest movies you can watch from home right now.
1. The Gentlemen
Guy Ritchie, the director behind Disney’s 2019 live-action Aladdin remake, returns to his crime comedy roots with The Gentlemen. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Hugh Grant, Collin Farrel and Eddie Marsan.
2. Birds of Prey
Margot Robbie reprises her role as Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey, the followup to the 2016 film, Suicide Squad. This time around she is joined by a posse of femme fatales who must band together to defeat the psychotic mob boss, Roman Sionis (aka Black Mask).
3. Emma.
Based on the Jane Austen novel of the same name, this comedy-drama marks the directorial feature film debut of American photographer, Autumn De Wilde, and it stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Johnny Flynn, Josh O’Connor, Miranda Hart and Bill Nighy.
4. The Invisible Man
The Invisible Man was the last bona fide hit released in movie theaters before the coronavirus spread forced their closure, grossing more than $123 million against a $7 million production budget. Now you can watch the reimagined horror classic from the comfort of your home, a mere four weeks after it was released in theaters.
5. Guns Akimbo
You might remember him best for his career-defining role as Harry Potter, but Daniel Radcliffe shows some serious comedy chops in this violent action-comedy about a computer programmer that gets dragged into a death match with a formidable foe, played by Samara Weaving.
6. Onward
Onward is the latest film from Pixar Animation Studio, and it is a heartwarming coming-of-age story about two elf brothers who must embark on a road trip in order to complete a spell that would bring back their late father for one last day. It features the voice talents of Tom Holland, Chris Pratt and Octavia Spencer.
7. The Way Back
In The Way Back, Ben Affleck plays an alcoholic who must overcome his addiction after he is recruited to coach his former high school basketball team. Himself a struggling alcoholic in real life, Ben channels his personal experiences with alcoholism to deliver an exceptional performance.
8. The Hunt
The Hunt is yet another violent action-comedy that recently found its way onto VOD. In it, 12 strangers wake up gagged in the middle of nowhere to discover that they are being hunted by some wealthy elites. Only watch this if you have a stomach for blood and gore and some seriously over-the-top violence.
9. Bloodshot
Vin Diesel plays the titular hero in this comic-book adaptation about a U.S. marine who is brought back to life and turned into the ultimate super solider. That’s all you need to know really, as this is one of those films where the less you know going in, the more enjoyment you might derive from it.
10. I Still Believe
The last movie on our list is this faith-based drama from Lionsgate, based on real-life Christian singer, Jeremy Camp, and his relationship with his first wife, Melissa Lynn Henning. It stars KJ Apa, Britt Robertson, Gary Sinise and country singer, Shania Twain.
