..Says Campaigns Will Curb Spread Of Coronavirus
In its efforts to further curtail the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic among the populace, the Lagos State Government has launched a handwashing challenge tagged “MyHandsAreSafe”, in partnership with Jumia Nigeria.
The challenge which debuted on Monday, 30th March 2020 is aimed at encouraging regular washing of hands as a potent tool to contain the spread of the virus.
The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Sustainable Development Goals and Investment, Mrs. Solape Hammond made the announcement at a special event organised by Jumia Nigeria.
According to her, the handwashing challenge will not only teach the citizens the right way to wash their hands as advised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other health authorities, but also encourage them to imbibe the habit in order to stay safe of the virus and other contagious diseases.
In her words, “In this instance, prevention is not only better than cure – it’s all we have at the moment. The #MyHandsAreSafe challenge is a deliberate effort to use an online viral challenge towards minimising the spread of the disease. The significance of SDG3 (Health and Well-being) and SDG6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) cannot be over-emphasised at this particular time of our national life”.
While appreciating Jumia Nigeria for the partnership, Hammond restated the commitment of the State Government to reducing the impact of Coronavirus pandemic through collaboration, noting that her office already has an ongoing programme with Reckitt Benckiser, the maker of Dettol, to educate and teach primary schools pupils the techniques of handwashing and hygiene.
The Special Adviser stated that the programme is expected to reach 50,000 pupils in 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas in the State.
While explaining the importance of the partnership with the Lagos State Government, Mrs. Juliet Anammah, the Chairperson of Jumia Nigeria, said, “Jumia is very happy to leverage our online ecosystem, in collaboration with Lagos State, to promote the challenge for the benefit of all the citizens, and we enjoin Lagosians to participate fully in the programme.
“Washing our hands is at least one thing we can all do to support our Government and our healthcare workers who are at the frontline in the battle against the dreaded virus”, she affirmed.
