Violence against women is a silent epidemic that affects an estimated 50% of women in Nigeria. Among educated women, cases of beatings by spouses have reportedly increased 10% within the past 3 years. Even children often become victims as well. Yet, a vast majority of these cases go unreported for reasons including fear and a perceived lack of choices.

In the last week, Jumia, Lóreal and Project Alert have joined forces to take the International Women’s Day celebration a step further by hosting training and empowerment sessions for Nigerian women with a mission to empower women to be financially independent and to protect them against violence. This event took place at the Jumia auditorium in Ikeja Lagos on the 11th of March, 2015 with several media brands present, Project Alert’s client organisations including Women’s Consortium, Legal Defence and Assistance Project (LEDAP), Alliance for Africa, Champions Club International, Gender Care Initiative, and Positive Life for Women all in attendance. The event was an eye-opener for everyone present with presentations on how to join the Jumia Sales Force and Market place and how these processes work by the Jumia experts.

Participants went home with lots of confidence-boosting gift items from L’Oreal brands and Jumia gift vouchers as well. When some of the women were interviewed on what the seminar had done to them, their responses were nothing short of fulfilment and excitement.
