Microsoft reveals specs for the Xbox Series X

The next-generation console race continues to heat up as Microsoft has just revealed some technical specifications for its forthcoming Xbox One successor, the Xbox Series X. Originally unveiled during the 2019 Game Awards, the next-gen console promises to be twice as powerful as the current most-powerful console on the market, the Xbox One X.

Xbox Series X features

The Xbox Series X is detailed as having 12 teraflops of GPU power, as opposed to the Xbox One X’s 6 teraflops. This is made possible by a custom-designed AMD processor that is based on the chip manufacturer’s Zen 2 and RDNA 2 architectures. This would enable games to run as fast as 120 frames per second at up to 4k resolution. It is also capable of hardware-accelerated raytracing, which would in turn mean that it can render games with much more realistic lighting and shadows.

Other features that were revealed by Microsoft’s Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, via the announcement blog post include support for backwards compatibility with the Xbox One (and currently supported Xbox 360 and original Xbox games), a quick resume feature and faster loads times due to an included SSD, and a “Smart Delivery” feature where games are bought once and would work across all compatible Xbox consoles. There is still no word yet on pricing, although analysts expect that the console would retail for around $500 when it launches later this year.
