Today was supposed to be the start of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the biggest trade show in the mobile communications industry. Phone manufacturers use the annual event as a showcase for their available and forthcoming mobile devices. But due to concerns about the ongoing spread of the coronavirus, the event was cancelled. This was after exhibitors like Sony, LG and Nokia had already pulled out of the event.
So what exactly does its cancellation mean for the mobile landscape in the year to come? Well, for starters, the phone manufacturers would have to find alternative means of announcing their forthcoming flagships, much like Samsung did with their recent Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2020 event. They could also opt to do an online stream-only presentation, similar to what Nintendo presently does with its Nintendo Direct livestreams.
Some of the manufacturers that were expected to announce new flagships during the MWC include Sony, Huawei, Xiaomi and Oppo. Of these companies, only Sony has gone ahead with plans to unveil its latest flagship, the Sony Xperia 1 II, details for which were just revealed through a video on their YouTube channel.
The 5G device sports a 6.5-inch 4K high dynamic range (HDR) display. It also has a trio of 12-megapixel sensors in its back camera, much like the iPhone 11 Pro, and an 8-megapixel selfie camera in the front. Under the hood, the device is powered by a Snapdragon 865 processor, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of internal storage and a 4,000mAh battery. The full reveal video can be seen below:
