The winds of Harmattan might still be here but the competition is already heating up, movie lovers. I am of course referring to awards season, that period during which the various film awards bodies honor the best films that received a theatrical release within the past year. This typically begins with smaller independent film awards before culminating with the biggest ceremony, The Academy Awards.
The Golden Globes are arguably the second largest of all the ceremonies, an award show that honors both films and TV shows, and the 77th ceremony was held last night in Beverly Hills, California. Hosting duties were handled by Ricky Gervais, marking his fifth appearance as host.
Going into the ceremony, the film with the most nominations was the Netflix drama, Marriage Story, which had a total of six nominations, including nods for Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Screenplay, as well as acting nods for its two leads, Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson.
The streaming giant had a total of 34 nominations spread across the film and TV categories, the most of any one studio or network, including a further five nominations for the Martin Scorsese crime drama, The Irishman. And in what is certain to go down in history as a major pushback against online streaming in general, Netflix only received two awards, Best Supporting Actress for Laura Dern in Marriage Story, and Best Performance in a Television Series – Drama for Olivia Coleman in The Crown.
Top honors in the Best Motion Picture Drama and Musical or Comedy categories were given to Sam Mendes’ 1917 and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood respectively. The former also took home Best Director while the latter was honored with Best Screenplay.
Brad Pitt also received the award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as stuntman Cliff Booth in Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood, while Joaquin Phoenix, Renée Zellweger, Taron Egerton and Awkwafina were honored in the Best Performance categories for their roles in Joker, Judy, Rocketman, and The Farewell respectively. And in one of the most predictable wins of the evening, the South Korean black comedy, Parasite, took home the award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Other notable wins include Best Original Score for Joker, as well as Best Original Song for “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from Rocketman. And in what is undoubtedly one of the biggest head-scratching moments of the ceremony, Missing Link beat out Frozen II, How to Train you Dragon: The Hidden World, The Lion King and Toy Story 4 to win Best Animated Feature Film.
