The 92nd Academy Awards

Author:

The most prestigious award ceremony in the realm of film has just concluded, and with it comes the end of the current movie awards season. The 92nd Academy Awards (or Oscars as they are otherwise known) were held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California. Going into the ceremony, Joker led the pack with 11 nominations in total. But by the end of the evening, it had only two of those in the bag: Best Score for Hildur Guðnadótti and a much-expected Best Actor win for Joaquin Phoenix. The biggest winner (and indeed surprise) of the entire ceremony though was Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite.

The South Korean film made history by becoming the first ever foreign language film to win Best Picture. This was in addition to wins in the Best Director, Best International Feature Film and Best Original Screenplay categories. That’s 4 awards out of 6 nominations, for those of us keeping count. The film had beaten out the World War I epic, 1917, which had been a frontrunner for Best Picture all through awards season.

The Sam Mendes-directed war thriller didn’t go home empty-handed though, winning a trio of technical awards for Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Mixing and Best Cinematography. Other notable winners include Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood (Best Supporting Actor and Best Production Design), Ford v Ferrari (Best Film Editing and Best Sound Editing) and Toy Story 4 (Best Animated Feature Film). The acting categories pretty much went the way they had gone in other ceremonies, so there weren’t any surprises there.
