Last night, the Barnsdall Gallery Theatre in Los Angeles was supposed to play host to the 40th Golden Raspberry Awards. Otherwise known as the Razzies, the ceremony was going to recognise the worst films that were released in 2019. But in the wake of the ongoing coronavirus outbreak in the United States, and recent government mandates that prohibit large gatherings, the ceremony has been canceled.
This was despite the organizers earlier announcing that the show would go on as planned. The co-founder of the awards, John Wilson, later had this to say in a followup statement explaining the news. “Because the Mayor of Los Angeles shut down all city-owned venues where more than 50 people could gather, including our site, The Barnsdall Theatre. Without a hall, we could not proceed with the show.”
This year would have marked the first time in the ceremony’s 40-year history that the show was going to be televised. It was also going to be the second year in a row that the ceremony was being held after The Academy Awards. The winners of the various awards that were to be given out have since been revealed in a video that was released on YouTube.
